FILLINGS
What are dental fillings?
Dental fillings are materials used to repair minimal fractures in the tooth, tooth decay or damage to the surface of the tooth. Fillings may also be used to even out tooth surfaces for better biting or chewing. In the case of enamel loss, a common component of tooth decay, fillings may be used to improve or eliminate tooth sensitivity.
Several materials are used in dental fillings. The most common fillings are made of composite or silver amalgam. Composite fillings are tooth colored and provide a more natural look than silver amalgam.
How do I know if I need a dental filling?
The need for a dental filling is most often identified during a routine dental checkup. During your exam, your dentist may identify teeth affected by decay or damage and recommend dental fillings. A toothache or discomfort in your teeth may also signal the need for a dental filling.
What is the procedure for a dental filling?
Your dentist will first prepare the tooth and necessary surrounding areas for the dental filling procedure. The area is numbed and as much decay and damage as possible is removed with a dental hand-piece or laser. Then, the area is cleansed of bacteria and debris in preparation for the dental filling.
The tooth is then isolated. This prevents moisture from getting into the filling and affecting the bonding process. For composite fillings, the bonding procedure requires the placement of adhesives which hold the composite material in place. The filling is then hardened with a special bonding light. The completed filling is both functional and natural looking.
Silver amalgam fillings last approximately 12 years and composite fillings can be expected to last five to seven years. The lifetime of your fillings depends in large part on your dental hygiene and your commitment to continued dental visits.
