PORCELAIN VENEERS
What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of tooth shaped porcelain that are bonded to the front of teeth. Once in place, porcelain veneers can cover a variety of teeth problems and restore a beautiful smile. Porcelain veneers can also provide an alternative to crowns in some situations.
When are Porcelain Veneers recommended?
Porcelain veneers can cover many unattractive teeth problems including:
- Severely discolored or stained teeth
- Teeth that are too small or large
- Crooked or oddly shaped teeth
- Teeth with uneven surfaces or small holes
- Unwanted or uneven spaces
- Worn or chipped teeth
What is the procedure for getting Porcelain Veneers?
Getting porcelain veneers usually requires two visits to your dentist. During the first visit, the teeth are lightly buffed to prepare for the veneers. Since porcelain veneers will add a slight thickness to the tooth, buffing is required to reduce the tooth slightly. A mold or impression is then taken of the teeth and you and your dentist will select a shade or color for the veneers. The impression and color selection are then used to create the veneers. Temporary veneers are sometimes placed to be worn until your permanent veneers are ready.
During your second, the teeth are cleansed with special chemicals to ensure a strong bond. The porcelain veneer is then attached to the tooth with bonding cement. A special light beam is used to harden and set the bond.
Veneers are not permanent and will eventually have to be replaced. However, good dental care including brushing, flossing and regular dental cleanings will help extend the life of your veneers.
