TEETH WHITENING
What is teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening or tooth bleaching is a simple treatment used to whiten teeth discolored by smoking, coffee, tea, wine or other staining agents. Teeth whitening works on natural tooth enamel by bleaching the enamel to a white hue. The procedure is an easy, affordable way to change the color of natural tooth enamel and brighten your smile.
Can teeth whitening help my teeth?
Teeth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel. Patients with fillings, crowns or other restorations would need to consult with your dentist to determine whether teeth whitening is an option.
Teeth whitening is ideal for treating:
- Yellow or brown stained teeth
- Teeth stained from medications
- Genetically discolored or dull tooth color
- Aged tooth enamel
- Fluoride deposits or excessive fluoridation
What is the procedure for teeth whitening?
Teeth whitening can be done at home or in your dentist's office. The in-office procedure takes about 30 minutes to one hour and usually requires two visits.
During your visit, your dentist will apply either a protective gel to your gums or a rubber shield to protect the oral soft tissues. A bleaching agent is then applied to your teeth and a special light is used to enhance the action of the agent. Lasers are also sometimes used during teeth whitening procedures to enhance the action of the whitening agent. A second visit is necessary to ensure the best possible results from the teeth whitening procedure.
Teeth whitening is not permanent so follow up visits are required to maintain the new, whiter color of your teeth.
